Two dead, 14 injured in Nchiraa yam festival disturbances, police say
The Bono Regional Police Command says two people died and 14 were injured during disturbances at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality. Police say 13 of the injured, including an officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment.
The Wenchi Divisional Police has restored calm after disturbances at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region left two people dead and 14 injured, the Bono Regional Police Command says.
According to a police press release dated October 5, 2026, the incident occurred at the Four Junction during a yam festival celebration on Saturday, October 3. Police said the disturbances began at about 5:30 p.m., after the programme had ended, while Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace. A gunshot was heard at the palace, the release said.
The police said 13 people, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and were receiving treatment. The bodies had been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police said patrols had been intensified in Nchiraa and that the situation remained calm. The Bono Regional Police Command said it was making every effort to arrest individuals involved in the disturbances. Any persons arrested would be presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court.
