Ghana has launched new guidance for responsible media reporting of suicide and a national review of the evidence and data systems used in suicide prevention, the World Health Organization said on 19 October.

The two resources are the Guidelines for Appropriate Media Reporting of Suicide and a situational analysis of evidence and data systems for suicide prevention. They are intended to support safer reporting, stronger data and evidence-informed policy.

The release is an important step, but it should not be described as the completion or full implementation of Ghana’s broader national suicide-prevention strategy. WHO says that wider work is still being developed.
