ECG Ashanti West urges customers to verify visiting officers and avoid cash payments
Customers should check franchise officers’ IDs and signed authorisation letters. The officers are not authorised to collect money.
Electricity customers in Ashanti West should verify the identity and authority of visiting franchise officers and must not pay them money, ECG’s regional spokesperson has said.
Benjamin Obeng Antwi told the Ghana News Agency that customers can check identification cards and signed authorisation letters carrying district contact numbers.
What officers may do
Their responsibilities include reading meters, inspecting prepaid meters, delivering bills and carrying out authorised disconnections involving arrears or illegal connections. Cash collection before or after disconnection is not part of their duties, he said.
Customers needing to pay ECG can use its official payment channels. A visitor’s claim to work for the company should not replace verification.
The report concerns the Ashanti West operation, following a pilot in Abuakwa and Suame. It is not an announcement of a new Accra enforcement exercise.
