Naval leaders, security specialists and policymakers are meeting in Accra for the first African Maritime Security Forum, taking place on 14 and 15 October at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

The forum is organised with the Royal Danish Defence College and Stellenbosch University's Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa. An official Ghana Armed Forces report says participants are examining regional cooperation and emerging maritime threats.

Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei called for coordinated, intelligence-led action. Maritime security matters to coastal livelihoods as well as the movement of goods: piracy, trafficking and disruption at sea can affect several countries.

The discussions are not a newly announced joint operation. The illustration accompanying this report shows Ghanaian naval vessels in a 2005 exercise, not the current meeting.
